This original, period Tintype Photograph measures approx. 2” by 3” and is uncased. The Photo is a half length, seated portrait of a young, heavily armed Union Cavalry Soldier wearing a 9 button shell jacket with shoulder scales and lighter colored, regulation trousers. There is an eagle belt plate at his waist and on his lap rests his kepi with prominently displayed, crossed saber insignia. Two Revolvers are thrust into his belt and he displays a third revolver that he holds in his right hand. His left hand grasps the hilt of his sheathed sword which he holds upright at his left side. Unfortunately neither the Soldier nor the photographer is identified in any way.
This very rare and original, Civil War Tintype Portrait of a quadruple armed Union Army Cavalry Soldier is in very good to excellent condition. The Image exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. There is some VERY light and minor crazing to the surface on the bottom half of the plate but there are no other surface nicks, scratches, flaking, physical damage or repairs of any kind. Overall this striking Civil War Cavalryman Portrait Photo is very well preserved and displays beautifully! As stated above the Image is uncased.
A very rare and original, 1860’s Civil War Sixth Plate Tintype Photograph of a heavily armed Union Army Cavalry Soldier and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
