This was the first year that the US issued the $3 Gold coin needed to purchase 100 Three-Cent (3C) stamps at that time (1854). This coin was also distinctly different from subsequent years because the word "DOLLARS" on the reverse is much smaller than on issues from 1855 - 1889.
