The preface tells us that Assamese literature began to acquire its written form in the 13th century (the Vaishnava poets). This ancient literature had 2 phases (1200-1450 and 1450 -1650). The Ahoms's Buranjis historical literature followed and the modern period began when the American Baptist Mission and the English education system encouraged its growth in the late 19th century. This book has two sections: old Assamese literature and New Assamese literature.
