A Japanese map of China, Korea and Russia focusing on where the Russo - Japanese war was fought. Port Arthur (Now Lushun) has an expanded view in the upper left. An overall expanded view of this part of the world is shown in the lower right.

Japan was very proud of the Russo - Japan war. It was the first time an Asian country defeated a European country in battle. At this time China was weak and Russia convinced them to lease Port Arthur (Lushan now) to them as a southern port. Their only other Pacific port was north in Vladivostok which froze over in winter.
Japan considered that area of the Pacific their sphere of influence and didn't want the Russians there. Japan won most of the battles against the Russians.
Russia also had supply problems. their supplies had to come overland from Moscow on their one set of railroad tracks. Their ships had to come from the Baltics and go around Africa.
Eventually Theodore Roosevelt negotiated the Treaty of Portsmouth and the Russians left Port Arthur and Japan was recognized as the primer power in East Asia.

The map is titled "Triumph Memorial Map" in Japanese. It was issued by Tokyo Mainichi Shimbun" (Tokyo Daily Newspaper) on Nov 11, 1905. (Date Meiji 38, is shown on the left side of the map with a close up in photo # 3)
The condition is very good. There are folds, because that's how the map was sold, but none of the folds have broken. It is still in it's original cover which is attached to the back of the map with a dab of rice paste. This could be easily separated but we'll leave that decision up to its eventual owner.

   It's 21 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches.
