RED HEAD, of Rock Island, Illinois was a popular sporting goods company a couple of generations ago. They produced or distributed a number of clothing and leather accessories at fair prices and were widespread across the nation. Their motto was "FITS THE SPORT"

This is for a vintage, used, RED HEAD of Chicago, Illinois, leather Sportsman/Field FLAP Gun Holster in plain russet brown.
This holster does not have the REDHEAD logo. Though it has their application codes, and style of stitching and flap decor. It is almost certainly their brand. It was common practice 50 years ago for holster makers to create generic, unbranded holsters for sporting goods store, and allow that store to put their name on it if they wished.
This is the "Closed Top" or Flap design by the company. A BELT LOOP LOOP design, made to slide over your belt up to 2" wide. Made with a good middle weight leather, not wet molded, but designed to form around your gun.
The holster has a waxed lock stitching the full flap design covers & protects your pistol. It has what was sometimes called "CHROMED" finish leather, a vintage preservative finish coating over the leather surface with a low shine to it. A metal stud (curiously not brass) secures the flap and has a leather cover inside to avoid scratching your gun.
These features date it back in the 1940's, and my guess is this was a WWII or just post WWII holster, designed for private purchase (Not military contract) to carry the surplus COLT 1911's that were so popular.

WHAT IT FITS
The holster is marked on the back with the RED HEAD type Application codes
1308C
Redhead old catalog specs state this holster fits older flat sided autos of the day, with up to a 5" barrel.
Models include
COLT 1911 Government 5" .45 ACP
Modern ones should fit as well as old, but not rail models or built up guns.
BROWNING Hi-Power
I have shown it with a 1911 Govt. Gun not included.
Other similar framed COLTS may also fit, please check your application and make sure this is right for you.
If you want a correct application vintage holster for your vintage gun, or just a good solid holster for your modern gun, this may be the one for you.
