Melvin Jones, creator of Lions Clubs on June 7, 1917, was born on January 13, 1879 in Fort Thomas, Arizona in the United States. Having become an insurance company owner, he joined the Chicago Business Circle of which he became secretary. He died on June 1, 1961.
This association allows 200 executives from industrial and commercial companies to meet for their network. But this design did not satisfy Melvin Jones, who convinced members of the Chicago Business Circle as well as other circles to commit to nobler causes. Then the notion of ""Club-Service"" appears.
On June 7, 1917, representatives of the circles met in Chicago, on the initiative of Melvin Jones. They gave birth to the LIONS movement, whose first convention was held October 8–10, 1917 in Dallas, Texas. At this convention, the first code of ethics for Lionism is written.
In 1919, the current Lions Clubs emblem was adopted, symbolizing strength and courage. The color purple symbolizes loyalty to one's country, friends, and self, as well as integrity of heart and mind. Gold symbolizes sincerity of intentions, tolerance, spiritual and material generosity towards one's neighbor. On either side, the profiles of lions are outward-facing, symbolically facing both the past with pride and the future with confidence. Artist Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899), author of numerous animal paintings depicting, among others, proud heads of roaring lions, was recognized as the inspiration for the badge.
Lions membership will become a way of being and behaving generously, an open mind for the benefit of man regardless of nationality, religion or philosophy.
