There were a handful of pipes that completely stopped me in my tracks in Chicago last month and this was one of them! I acquired it from Tony Soderman's daughter who has been showing up to Chicago ever since her Dad's unfortunate passing in 2016. If you aren't familiar with Tony "Mr. Can" Soderman, he was the largest collector of Canadian style pipes the world has ever known, award winning and unsurpassed! He had quite the collection of epic Canadian's and every variation of the shape with many of his pieces commissioned like this impressive Lumberman made by Andy Petersen of Quad City Pipes in 2014. I am unsure if Andy is still carving, but he was quite talented as you can see and this briar burl must have been massive to carve this pipe from! Easily a Group 5 it offers a hearty bowl that feels amazing in hand with extra thick walls and a lovely smooth inflated rim opening to a generous chamber. The shank is super long, wide and oval and extends far to meet the original hand-cut acrylic saddle stem Lovat style with real lvory accent adding a classy touch. Finish is milk chocolate with a superb blast that intricately details the ring grain and birdseye craters! Near mint, a special offering from the collection of the late great Tony Soderman, this one's not to be missed!

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 16 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
