I was fortunate in Chicago to spend some time with Maurizio Fraternale who owns Ser Jacopo/Mastro Geppetto as well as Tommy Ascorti and Luigi Viprati! They traveled together from Italy and always make a splash! Maurizio was proudly telling me about Geppetto pipes and their new offerings which he said are the finest they've ever released. Geppetto is not a second but rather a sub-brand and there's a huge difference there. Seconds of course are inferior pipes typically that makers sell for cheap while sub-brands are usually but not always more reasonably priced as well but in the case of Geppetto they use the same exact choice seasoned briar they employ for Ser Jacopo pipes. A good comparison that comes to my mind is Patent era Parkers compared to Dunhill. Same wood, many of the same shapes, sometimes even better grain and blasts! I have never been able to figure out why those early Parkers weren't Dunhills as I've never seen a flaw. Anyhow, I picked up a nice batch of Geppetto pipes and cherry picked the ones with exceptional grain and awesome shapes like this Liscia 2 octagonal paneled Billiard that remains unsmoked and is an absolute gem! I love this shape, a robust Group 4 and feels awesome in hand while sporting super thick walls surrounding a healthy sized chamber. The shank is round and chubby while well proportioned and meets a beautiful faux amber fishtail stem with inlaid silver Pinocchio logo. Finish is a stunning chestnut contrast while the briar displays spectacular birdseye and cross grain. Comes complete with box and sock and awaits it's first smoke, stay tuned as I'll be listing more of these brand new pipes from Mastro Geppetto that are sure to please!

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 16 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
