I had the chance in Chicago to meet both Maurizio Fraternale of Ser Jacopo and the legendary Luigi Viprati and admittedly was a bit star struck! I love that they have come together finally to offer a collaboration cased two pipe set like this, such a special Limited Edition indeed. Both Ser Jacopo and Viprati need no introduction, two of the most respected names in high grade Italian pipes and with a set like this you know these are going to smoke beautifully! I'll start with the Ser Jacopo up top in the case, a fantastic Spongia R2 grade square shank bent Dublin that sports a perfectly formed bowl with extra thick walls and a deep chamber. The heel is rocker making for a nice setter while to the rear an almost half bent awesome square shank adorned with an ornate Sterling Silver band. Stem is acrylic saddle, long with a fishtail bit and inlaid silver "J" logo. Finish is natural with the signature craggy "Spongia" rustication  given an R2 grade as it is not only visually appealing but the texture in hand is fantastic! A classic from Ser Jacopo indeed, now on to the Viprati! Luigi carved a stunner here, an oval shank bent freehand Dublin with an awesome Calabash style look to the bowl with substantial inflated rim that opens to a healthy sized chamber. Transition is rather effortless to a creased oval shank that is long and also features a Sterling Silver band depicting yin and yang! Stem is acrylic Cumberland with fishtail bit, downturned bend and silver inlaid Viprati logo. Finish is a deep walnut contrast with golden undertones with the grain showing off 360 degree straight and flame but the star of the show to me is the birdseye covering the rim, wow! Both pipes are brand new and unsmoked, a wonderful cased set that is simply not to be missed!

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 16 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
