In the 1970's Dunhill made a lot of changes including their shape numbers. The LB ceased to exist after 1975 but was "replaced" with the 5103 despite originally being a Group 4. The famous 120 "Swan Neck" bent Billiard that is arguably in Dunhill's top 3 most famous shapes of all time and dates back to the early 1920's was replaced by the 5202 seen here. The LB and 120 were always some of Dunhill's biggest Group 4's that were easily Group 5's so I suppose it made sense. The Group 4's like the 4103 and the 4102 just are not "robust" enough to create the iconic look of those shapes that have been sought after for 100 years! What's also interesting is the Chestnut is listed by Dunhill as being introduced in 1983 to commemorate the closing of the Cumberland Road warehouse yet I've had a 1982 and have seen a few others. Anyhow, this impressive piece was carved in 1983 and is quite the pipe indeed. It sports a bowl more reminiscent of the 128 to my eye versus the 120, tall with thick walls and a cavernous chamber. Transition is effortless yet pronounced to a sturdy round shank that swoops up to meet the original Cumberland saddle stem with lovely "grain", fishtail bit and signature white spot. The Chestnut is said to use the same finish as the Cumberland but smooth of course and shows gorgeous golden contrast tones with hints of auburn while the grain is fantastic displaying tons of big swirling birdseye on the flanks with amazing depth and fine cross grain to the front and rear! Overall clean throughout, another phenomenal pipe from the venerable English marque.

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 16 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
