Another gem I found in Chicago is this pipe from an up and coming premier Artisan Carver who resides in Greece by the name of Yorgos Mitakidis. If you're not familiar with him, check out his work online that can already be found in many of the pipe shops here and abroad as he is establishing himself among the best. Being a traditionalist, I find his work extremely impressive as he primarily carves classics which are profoundly harder to master than freehands. This Belge for example is perfection in my eye and happens to be carved from Strawberry wood: Look at that ring grain blast, whoa!!!! It remains unsmoked and is a phenomenal example of Yorgos' craft and features a beautifully formed Egg bowl showing lovely forward cant with thick walls and a healthy sized chamber. At only 24g it is amazingly lightweight and well balanced making for a quintessential clencher. Shank is just about pencil width, a touch more and adorned with a brilliant 925 Sterling Silver band which looks awesome against the dark backdrop and also to me makes this pipe look even more like an old school classic. Stem is hand-cut ebonite with fishtail bit and "Y" shaped draft to promote a smooth effortless draw. Finish looks jet-black but is actually a super dark burgundy and again this pipe is made from Strawberry wood that has fantastic smoking characteristics and as you can see when it goes to the blaster the ring rain is magnificent! Awaiting its maiden voyage and comes complete with original thick leather glove, a special offering from Mitakidis that simply will not disappoint.

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 16 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
