Every week I like to start my auctions off with a bang, something special and this week it's an unsmoked Preben Holm Private Collection grade C! Preben was arguably the finest freehand carver of all time and his pipes the gold standard during a time when Danish "armchair" pipes reigned king. These were typically big boys and all the rage from the late 1960's all the way up through the early 1980's! I remember as a kid in the early 1980's going into my local Tinderbox inside the mall as I loved looking at the big Freehands they had in a case. Unfortunately gone are those days for the most part, but it's pipes like this that are nostalgic to me and I hope the same for you! Preben's Private Collection are considered the pinnacle of his work and carved not long before he passed away in the late 80's. They are graded in ascending order A, B, C, D or with numbers 101, 202, 404, 606 and 808, sometimes both. Technically there are 5 grades with the 808 being the highest with this C grade the second highest in the lettering grade scale. This shape here to me is about as classic as it gets, a fluted Dublin showing floral characteristics and long at well over 7". What's rare is not only does it remain unsmoked but it comes with original box and glove; not easy to find! The bowl is beautifully carved, again Dublin at heart and oval with massive thick walls, concave rim and chamfered interior with a relatively modest chamber for a Private Collection though still affords healthy capacity. The fluting on the left side adds a nice touch and I love the patch of plateau on the rim! Heel is unique though many times Preben would carve this "crook" at the transition to a squared shank with diamond carving and extended by a vulcanite mount that holds the original fancy vulcanite stem with awesome spiral cut, fishtail bit and signature still intact. Finish is warm medium with golden undertones and the grain shows why this briar earned the high grade of "C" with 360 degree dazzling angel hair fine straight grain and the rim covered in birdseye, wow! Again this pipe has never seen flame, a rare opportunity at quite the collector's piece here, this one is not to be missed!

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 16 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
