These rare from 1971,  are part of a series designed to interest young readers in words. This interest is fostered partly by explaining the origin of the words with some rudimentary etymological explanations, partly by the sheer interest of the pictures, and partly by the association of ideas. The result is a simple but attractive reference book which will assist the building of a child's vocabulary and store of knowledge.  There are over a hundred words beginning with A in one book and over a hundred words beginning with B in the other book.

Examples of A words include alphabet, aurora, atlas, antipodes, amphibious, aquarium, ark, astronomy, arctic, accountant, acrobat, architect, address, archaeopteryx, alps, autograph, archaeology, ambulance, artichoke, audition, angling, athletics.

Key words in the B book include buccaneers, brontosaurus, buoy, broadside,, ballistics, brass, buttress, bungalow, bride, book, butterfly, box, bathysphere, brass, bears, barn, baptism, braille, ballet, bush .

The index of each book contains a simple guide to the pronunciation of the words .

Both books are in a very good condition with dust covers.
