COMPANY INFO:

The Cook brothers founded a Chicago based business in 1867 mostly of canvas based good such as awnings, tents, waterproof wagon, horse & truck covers, flags, banners and canvas signs.
Later they expanded range to include leather crafted items including jackets, cartridge vests, leggings, hats, gun and rifle covers, holsters, belts, cartridge belts, rod cases, and boots.

The Red Head brand name first appeared in 1908. In 1915, a half million dollar contract for boots for the British Army was rejected and the company was forced into bankruptcy. A former employee, Theo. Anderson reformed the company & took over the closed factory and resumed production of the defunct Cook brothers product line.

The company grew and flourished, coined the slogan "Fits the Sport" and even opened a new factory in 1940 at 4300 Belmont Ave, Chicago and employed 500 workers.

Anderson had died in 1931 and his widow carried on to 1956. After 3 years Red Head was purchased by the Brunswick Blake Collender Co, AKA the Bowling ball folks, operating the company with greater emphasis in the Hunting Goods line through the 1960s.
In 1970, Red Head Brand was again sold and operations relocated to Dallas Texas under the Buddy Schoellkopf Company...known for Black Sheep and Jumbo brands.

Eventually losing its identity as a leather goods and holster company, the RED HEAD BRAND NAME is currently owned and survives under Bass Pro shops. They have been marketing Red Head as a “heritage brand”, and put it on some hunting related items and clothing, but no holsters or leather crafted goods.

This is for a vintage, used, RED HEAD of Chicago, Illinois, leather Sportsman/Field Hip Gun Holster in plain russet brown.
--

This is one of the oldest ones I have handled, and it does not bear the RED HEAD Logo, but does have the classic 4 Rivet loop and basic cut and code appication code style.  Indicators show it is from the Mid 1940's.

It is a DB-DETACHABLE BELT Model, a copy of the popular Snap loop, created by patent by Brauer Brothers in 1928.  The holster is their typical higher back cut, which helped avoid contact between the gun and your clothing to avoid stains and snags.

The holster  is semi wet molded and has a waxed lock stitching and a slicked and coated, NON-WELTED seam with fine machine stitching.  There is NO LOGO, and it uses UNITED CARR Snaps of a type employed by that company from in the MID 40's.

THIS IS A RIGHT HAND DRAW

 WHAT IT FITS

The holster is marked by the factory on the back with the application code

60 1926 6 1/2

It is possible this was also made by Red Head for another vendor, as was common then, but in anycase these codes pre-date my 1950's catalogs.

However ,based on the era and cut and holstering marks that fit perfectly

This was made for and fits

1st Series COLT WOODSMAN 6 5/8" barrel
(6 1/2 code stamping probably human error from the times)

Later models of COLT Woodsman and clones will also fit, but be shorter in the holster.

I have shown it with a later model COLT Challenger  - not included.

Other similar framed autos may also fit, please check your application and make sure this is right for you.

If you want a very unusual and correct vintage holster for your classic Woodsman...in very nice shape for an 80 year old rig...this may be the one for you!

However, this will allow us to reduce our basic prices.

Please use the Shipping Calculator to determine the Exact Rates to your USA Zip Code or Other Country Location

I do combine and discount shipping for multiple items won.
