INFANTRY TRAINING
1911

General Staff, War Office, 1911

H.M.S.O., London, 1911
Printed by MACKIE AND Co. Ltd, Warrington & London, 1911

A WW1 era British Army Infantry Training handbook, dating from 1911. The book covers the standard infantry training and battlefield tactics of the British Army at the start of the 20th century. Until a new and revised edition was published in 1914, this manual defined the basic operations of British infantry formations. It includes details of rifle fire proceedures and the tactical use of the .303 Vickers-Maxim Machine Gun. The book covers all aspects of infantry training: from ammunition supply, fire discipline, battlefield tactics, skirmishing, attack and defence, and machine gun tactics, to advice on bayonet fighting, wood fighting, trench building, marching, and company drill.

The book is signed on the front endpapers by its original owner,  ‘Archd. C. McMaster, Hopetoun St, Auckland’. Archibald Cotterell McMaster (1881-1935) was born in New Zealand in 1881 and educated at Prince Albert College, Auckland. He studied medicine and went on to attend Edinburgh University, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1908. In 1911 he was serving as a Lieutenant in the New Zealand Medical Corps, and in 1914 joined the British Royal Army Medical Corps. He was promoted to Captain in December 1915, and served with the 3rd Lowland Field Ambulance, the Edinburgh and Perth War Hospitals, and with the B.E.F. in the Italian Campaign in 1918.
