MUSKETRY

GENERAL STAFF, WAR OFFICE
H.M.S.O., 1909
printed by MACKIE AND CO. LTD, London, September 1909
The 1909 edition of Musketry Regulations, the official British War Office Musketry handbook. Very well illustrated with diagrams, photographs, drawings and fold-outs. The book covers the standard issue small arms and weapons of the British Army just before the start of the First World War: the Lee Enfield rifle, the Webley pistol, the hand grenade and the Maxim/Vickers Machine Gun. Concentrating mainly on the service rifle, it includes information on training, maintenance, ammunition, range practice, use on the battlefield etc. There is even a section on 'Fire in Two Ranks (for use in Savage Warfare)', which advocates exactly the same tactics famously used at Rorke's Drift and elsewhere during the colonial wars of the Victorian era.
