Description

This is a nice “Three Kreuzer” or “One Groschen” from Hungary. It was struck at the Kremnitz Mint (in modern Slovakia) and dated 1694 during the reign of “Holy Roman Emperor”, Leopold I commonly called “The Hogmouth”, who ruled from 1658 until his death on May 5, 1705.

“The Hogmouth”: Leopold had the misfortune to manifest perhaps the most extreme example of the Habsburg family trait of an enlarged lower lip. He insisted on being accurately portrayed as can be clearly seen on this coin. It is doubtful that anyone ever had the temerity to call him that to his face, but the derogatory epithet has come down to history, mostly I suspect, because of his image on the coins.

Weight: 1.44 Grams, 22 Millimeters, Silver.
“Standard Catalog of World Coins” by Krause-Mishler. (1601-1700) #163.

Obverse: LEOPOLD • D • G • R • I • S • A • G • H • B • REX • Leopold, by the grace of God, Roman Emperor, ever August, King of Germany, Hungary and Bohemia. • Laureate armored bust of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I right. • 3 in the circle is the denomination: Three Kreuzer.

Reverse: PATRONA • HVNGARIÆ • 1694 • Patron of Hungary. • Radiate, crowned, nimbate or with halo, Madonna and Child. She holds scepter and he holds globe. • Hungarian arms below. • The K and B flanking the Madonna is the Kremnitz mint mark.

The “Madonna and Child” and legend “Patron of Hungary” which is so prevalent on the coinage of Hungary was first placed there by King Matthias Corvinus who reigned from 1458 until 1490.

When mechanical coining presses began to replace hand striking, two different technologies were tried. One was the normal coinage press that is in universal use now. The other type of coining machine was the "Roller Press". Several die impressions were cut on a pair of rollers and a strip of coin metal was passed between them as they turned. The resulting strip of coins were then punched out. At a time when each blank had to be placed by hand on the anvil die of a standard press, and then removed by hand, the roller press provided a significant savings in time.

However, the finished coins would be slightly curved as can be seen on this piece. They would not stack well, and one side wore much faster than the other. The roller press did not last long.

The Coin: A nice example, it saw some use, shows light to medium wear and carries the normal circulation marks. It was struck on roller dies so the reverse is more worn than the obverse as usual. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
