Description

This is a very nice, silver, “Three Kreuzer” from Austria. It was struck at the Vienna mint and dated 1695 during the reign of “Holy Roman Emperor”, Leopold I commonly called Leopold “The Hogmouth”, who ruled from 1658 until his death on May 5, 1705.

“The Hogmouth”: Leopold had the misfortune to manifest perhaps the most extreme example of the Habsburg family trait of an enlarged lower lip. He insisted on being accurately portrayed as can be clearly seen on this coin. It is doubtful that anyone ever had the temerity to call him that to his face, but the derogatory epithet has come down to history, mostly I suspect, because of his image on the coins.

Error: The metals this coin was struck from were not properly mixed when it was liquid. The resulting “Mint Error” is called a “Lamination” and unusually, this coin displays a number of them.

Weight: 1.51 Grams, 22 Millimeters, Silver. Mintage: Unknown.
“Standard Catalog of World Coins” by Krause-Mishler. (1601-1700) #1169.

Obverse: LEOPOLDVS • D • G • R • I • S • A • G • H • B • REX • Leopold, by the grace of God, Roman Emperor, ever August, King of Germany, Hungary and Bohemia. • Laureate armored bust of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I right. • 3 in the circle is the denomination: Three Kreuzer. • Note the deep lamination error before the Emperor’s hair that continues on the reverse and another from the rim to the number 3 that does not.

Reverse: 16 95 • ARCHIDVX • AVST • DVX • BVR • CO: • TYR • Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy and Count of Tyrol. • Crowned double-headed Imperial Eagle holding sword and scepter. Habsburg arms on its breast. • The severe lamination at the top and another at the rim at 9 o’clock.

When mechanical coining presses began to replace hand striking, two different technologies were tried. One was the normal coinage press that is in universal use now. The other type of coining machine was the "Roller Press". Several die impressions were cut on a pair of rollers and a strip of coin metal was passed between them as they turned. The resulting strip of coins were then punched out. At a time when each blank had to be placed by hand on the anvil die of a standard press, and then removed by hand, the roller press provided a significant savings in time.

However, the finished coins would be slightly curved as can be seen on this piece. They would not stack well, and one side wore much faster than the other. The “Roller Press” quickly died out.

The Coin: A nice example, still lustrous, it did not see a lot of use. It was struck on roller dies so it is slightly curved. An extreme example of this fairly common, but sometimes dramatic, mint error. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
