Description

This is a World War II veteran, emergency, “One Shilling” note from the South Pacific Island of Fiji. Please see the map below. Dated January 1, 1942 it was printed in Australia during the period when Fiji was still under threat of Invasion.

The threat of Japanese invasion led to the construction of defensive fortifications and a quick buildup of military presence on the island, necessitating an emergency issue of currency. Due to its central location in the Pacific, Fiji became a crucial forward base for the Allies.  An airstrip was built at Nadi (later becoming an international airport) to support operations.
