Description
This is a very near uncirculated, low mintage, “Olympic Commemorative”, silver, “Five Hundred Markkaa” from “Suomi” or “Finland”. It was struck in 1952 to mark the Summer “Games of the XV Olympiad” at Helsinki.
These were the FIRST COINS to have the famous “5 Olympic Rings” on them.
The 5 rings were introduced in 1913, the flag was new in 1914, they first appeared at the Olympics of 1920.
Pierre de Coubertin, Founder of the Olympic Movement: “These five rings represent the five parts of the world now won over to the cause of olympism and ready to accept its fecund rivalries. What is more, the six colors thus combined reproduce those of all nations without exception”.
