ABOUT THE ARTIST
Juris Kakis is a Lativian-born contemporary artist based in Columbus, Ohio. Born in 1938 in Riga, Latvia, Kakis immigrated to the United States  at the age of 11. A gifted artist from a young age, Kakis received an award for his art within his first year of moving to America, while living in New York City. Kakis attempted to continue the generational legacy of doctors that the men in his family had perpetuated, but ended up pursuing his Masters of Fine Arts instead, going on to teach painting and drawing at Ohio Dominican University for 37 years. Kakis retired as a professor with tenure at Ohio Dominican and was, at the time of his retirement, the Chair of the Department of Art and Curator of the Wehrle Gallery. Exhibiting throughout the United States and Europe, Kakis’ works are included in the permanent collections of the Columbus Museum of Art and the National Museum of Art in Riga, Latvia, as well as numerous corporate and private collections.
