Hopi Zuni Indians Alter Stand Mesa Top New Mexico Arizona Julian Scott 1893
Title: "The Silent Heart's Appeal" Mr. Scott's picture is an Arizona scene, the site of one of the ancient cities, the ruins of which the Indians maintain have always been ruins ; no traditions exist among them of a time when they were standing, and were the abode of men. The figure is a middle-aged woman who has had trouble ; she has ascended the high mesa to where the altar stands, and is alone with her sorrow. These altars are found in an almost perfect state of preservation (so sacred are they held by all the Indians) among the vast ruined towns that are found on the mesa tops that skirt the valleys of Arizona and New Mexico
