On offer is a Japanese King Pelican 14 21mm Quarter Hollow to near Wedge razor. It says made from "Best Special Steel" , which I assume to be the original k120 Japanese steel. That is a version of Swedish steel with a very high carbon content (1.20%). The modern day k120 steel contains 1% carbon, in order to be much easier to handle. So, a very hard type of steel which gets very sharp. Most of people are familiar with the King Pelican brand which is one of the best out there from the renowned manufacturer Nichiri & Co. I acquired this razor through one contact(out of many) I established with great effort in Japan. This razor has seen very little use and there is minimal amount of hone wear. Please note that this razor is not shave ready so it will need honing. I won't be doing it so please enjoy doing it yourself or send it to a pro honer.
Condition Report: This razor is in very good+ condition with some minor blemishes. This razor has been restored by my father, who normally does that work for me. The restoration was done without any high speed tools with the integrity of the steel put as first priority. Only 5K and 7K sandpaper used, in order not to leave any nasty marks from lower level grits. This razor had no prior rust just some light pitting. After the restoration, there is very minimal amount of pitting. Some light watermarks remain as well but they are just visual blemishes, not performance related. It could have been very easy to sand the heck out of the razor and then put it in a high wheel to make it shine and claim "excellent condition" as many sellers do. But this is not the way I deal with razors and sell them. The razor is ready to be put back to service. There is very little hone wear, which is very important for stiff grinds. There is some edge and it is not dull. It will need some very light bevel setting work, or you can spend some extra time with a 3-5k grit stone. It won't take a lot of time to get to shave ready condition. Razor centres perfectly fine within the scales.
Remarks: I sold a similar razor about 2 weeks ago for £158. But the condition wasn't even close to the condition of this one. This is a top quality razor and I can remember on shaving forums in 2015/6 this razor would sell for 350 USD. This is my last King Pelican and the one that was stashing for myself. But I want to downsize my collection and also I prefer half hollow Japanese razors. Grab this razor and you won't regret it... Just a word of caution. K120 is a very hard steel and the combination with the stiff grind makes this razor an "acquired taste" choice. Make sure you know how to handle this combo as it is not as straightforward as your typical hollow ground Sheffield/Solingen steel razor... I personally wouldn't recommend it for beginners.
