This is an absolutely beautiful Ludwig Super Classic 16x16" floor tom that recently came into our shop on trade. We see LOTS of used drums come through the shop on a regular basis, but very few are as nice as this one! Clearly date stamped FEB 29 1968 (yep, 1968 was a leap year!), the shell is in-round with no signs of moisture exposure, the bearing edges are factory smooth, the Oyster Blue Pearl finish is vivid with tight seams, the painted interior is clean (and still smells like glue!), the chrome hardware has no significant corrosion, and all threaded components - including the internal muffler - operate smoothly. The batter-side hoop and tension rods have been replaced. All other hardware (reso-side hoop and tension rods, lugs, backing screws, leg brackets, legs, and internal muffler) appears to be original. Currently fitted with a new Remo Coated Ambassador on the batter side and a gently-used older Remo Coated Ambassador on the reso side, this tom is 100% fully functional, looks amazing, and sounds like a vintage Ludwig Super Classic... warm and full of old-school character!
All of that said, please keep in mind that this instrument is over a half century old, and as such, expect to find a few minor signs of age-appropriate use, handling, and storage, including small scuffs and scratches on the finish and hardware, a bit of corrosion on the Keystone badge (number 592100), and some light fingerprints and dust here and there. Most notably, there is a small puncture (approx. 3mm x 3mm, see closeup photo) beneath the badge that penetrates the wrap and outer plies of wood. The puncture does not go all the way through the inner plies, but it has produced a hairline crack in the paint on its opposite side (again, see closeup photo).
