This is an excellent find of a beautiful, working, antique, deeply hand carved, 8 day mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 40 years ago in the Black Forest of "Germany" by the "Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company." You don't get any more original than that! Actually, the Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company did a great deal to popularize the modern cuckoo clock since they were quick to mobilize after WWII and did all they could to get one of their high quality clocks into the hands of GI's returning home from the war. My father brought one home and I remember it to this day. This traditional clock is ornately detailed, has a 3 bird case design, and has a stunning dark mahogany finish! It is impressive in size too measuring about 13" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 5 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 9" or so at its widest point. The clock is carved the old world, high standard way from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The clock front is designed to look like an intricate grape vine and adorned with seven, very large, deeply carved, wooden grape leaves and a vining branch too; very nice! There is a beautifully hand carved, large wooden bird perched to the left of the lower dial and another equally attractive, carved wooden bird is perched to the right of the dial. Both of them are staring upward with their amber glass eyes at an even larger carved wooden bird atop the clock looking as though he is ready to take flight. The dial has a black backdrop on the chapter ring featuring easy to read, raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and a pair of matching, fancy hands to point out the time. The origin, "Germany" appears on the lower part of the dial. The back is wood too and marked, "Germany" as well. It is secured with a metal latch and removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement created by "Regula" and bears the Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company name and Germany point of origin too. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled about every week or so or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look good and make good sound. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. Actually, the door is already open but I don't have the time these days to make the simple adjustment he needs to open and close the door; I'll leave that to you. The bird gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door but like I said, he's not cooperating to close the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current hour before he is supposed to go back inside the case and close the door behind him. All in all, this is absolutely fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well too. But keep in mind this is an old clock, not a new one and it does work pretty well here for a 40 year-old clock but clocks do require maintenance. We don't know the service history but the movement does show signs of past service. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a fancy, large, hand carved wood grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and find only average or less wear and no damage or missing parts. It is truly a breathtaking clock with a great old world look to it, and is just gorgeous on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, 8 day mechanical Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it. Have the cuckoo door repaired, repair it yourself, or leave it the way it is. Regardless, bid with absolute confidence; you have found a real gem!
