It is said that only one in 10,000 pipes Comoy's made qualified with the utmost perfection to become a Blue Riband and while I'm unsure if that is true or not, it's certainly not hard to believe given how exceptional the grade is though in my experience the Specimen Straight Grain is much more scarce! The Specimen Straight Grain was at this time Comoy's highest grade offering and grain like this would set you back thousands of dollars with a Dunhill DR! Speaking of a Dunhill DR, this Comoy's would make one blush, a truly spectacular offering. This handsome Bulldog is a shape 4 which you don't often see as the 5 is much more prevalent. Comoy's always did make a very fine Bulldog with the 4 here about a Group 4 with a perfectly double beaded bowl showing a touch of forward cant and offers thick walls with a chamfered rim leading to a generous chamber for its size. The transition is crisp to a hearty diamond shank that is very well proportioned and meets the original saddle vulcanite stem with classic 3 piece "C" inlay and a fishtail bit. Finish is different than a Riband, more of a Walnut with a hint of auburn and golden undertones while the grain shows off why this briar earned the SSG grade with 360 degree angel hair fine straight that looks painted on with a brush! A fantastic opportunity to acquire one of the finest pipes Comoy's ever made, this one's for the utmost discerning collector.

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 16 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
