Vintage and complete, an excellent Stanley Bailey No 5 Jack plane. It is approx 14 inches long with a blade width of 2 inches.

It is a type 17 manufactured during WWII, between 1942 and 1945 so about 80 years ago. The type 17 war years planes had a thicker and heavier casting, a Steel or Bakelite depth adjustment nut and domestic hardwood handles.

Brass was very important for ammunition during the war so steel & Bakelite which was an early form of plastic was used in place of brass for the depth adjustment nut and steel was used for the handle hardware in place of brass nuts.

Metal bed and all other metal parts are excellent, no cracks breaks, or repairs. Black jappaning finish is great, about 90 percent.

This type 17 plane has the important frog adjustment screw most of the type does not.

I placed a flat edge along several places on the sole to insure a flat warp free surface. See photo.

The hardwood handles are in very good condition as well no breaks, cracks chips or repairs.

The original blade is the notched logo cutter it is full length and has been freshly sharpened with the correct 25 degree bevel. The mating surface of the chip breaker and blade has been flattened for great fit, see photo.

This plane does have the frog adjustment screw and All adjustments move and work smoothly.

I am in upstate South Carolina. I have

recently retired. One of my hobbies has been woodworking, but never had the time to do it as well as would like. A few years ago I became passionate about using vintage hand tools vs. battery or electric powered whenever it made sense

to do so.

Today my passion still

thrives and I enjoy properly oiling/waxing, cleaning or refurbishing, if needed those same vintage woodworking tools.

My goal is to place as many

of these high quality made in the USA vintage hand tools back into

the hands of today’s craftsmen. I would never “part out” a good tool just for the proceeds. If the tool I have acquired is serviceable I will put it into as good of condition it can be and sell to friends or on eBay. All I am trying to

do is receive some compensation for my time and retain enough capital to be able to purchase more tools, some in need of gentle care.  Please join me in “Saving the Tools”
