These four princes of the church are members of the Sacred College of Cardinals which will begin the task of electing a successor to Pope Pius XI on the throne of St. Peter within the next three weeks. At top left is Eugenio Cardinal Pacelli, pontifical secretary of state, archpriest of the Vatican Basilica, Camerlengo of the church, who administers affairs of the Vatican until such time as the new pope is elected; top right, Giuseppe Cardinal Pizzardo, Italian; lower left, Pierre Cardinal Gerlier, archbishop of Lyons, French; lower right, Karl Joseph Cardinal Schulte, archbishop of the "papabili".
