RARE

This auction is for a very unique early antique flat/thin scalloped floral motif lace fragment consisting of a cotton/linen-type threaded base with very fine, authentic copper and gold metal fibers woven throughout the lace and then slightly padded with these fibers in centers of flowers to create a slight dimensional effect. As can be seen in the underside of lace in photos depicted, the cotton fibers are in subtle shades of off-white/silver gray, very pale yellow, slate blue and red. They are very subtle shown in the right side of the lace (not bright or intense). I b we live this to be French in origin due to having lace similar decades ago. There is a name for this type of lace, however, I am not certain as to what it is after researching in internet. When the lace is doubled, one can really see the lovely, rich contrast of finely woven metal fibers which creates a lovely, subtle sparkle throughout. It’s the type of lace that one must study closely to fully appreciate. This is very scarce and have not seen one similar for a very long time.

I do not know if you would call this crocheted and judging from the underside, I do not believe it is handmade, but I could be wrong.

Photos do not do this justice. It was very difficult capturing its fine detail. It is not a heavy lace and when held, you can feel the metal fibers which are cool to the touch. After several attempts when the photos are enlarged, it only distorts the fine fibers which truly do not depict its interesting texture. Please note that the colorful threads from the underside are subtle and rich on the correct side.

A lovely interesting lace fragment for the collector.

It measures approximately 20” x 4.5”.
