Description
This is a low mintage, semi-key date, “Crown” or “Silver Dollar” size, .900 fine silver, "Un" or One Sol from the "Republic of Peru". It was struck at the Lima mint and dated 1897.
When Peru went from the "Spanish Colonial" and early Republican, Real denominated coinage to the new Sol denominated coinage, there was a transitional period in the 1850's. However, the full Sol denomination was not issued during this period. The first full “Un Sol” coins were issued in 1864. It was the largest silver coin.
Weight: 24.71 Grams, 37 Millimeters, .900 Silver. Mintage: 234,000.
Other dates in the series had mintages of 4 million or more.
As a comparison, the famous 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln Cent had a mintage of 484,000 pieces.

Obverse: REPUBLICA PERUANA LIMA 9 DECIMOS FINO • J. • F. •/• 1897 • The J. & F. were the mint assayer's initials.
Wreath above Peruvian arms. This was designed by José Gregorio Paredes, showing a Vicuña, (a relative of the Llama and Alpaca), the national animal of Peru, a Quina tree, the national tree, and a cornucopia with coins representing the mineral wealth of Peru.
Reverse: FIRME Y FELIZ • POR LA UNION • Firm and cheerfully for the Union. • UN SOL • Seated allegorical figure of Liberty, holding a tilted shield showing a sun face and a pole topped by a liberty cap. Pillar with wreath on top and a ribbon with the word LIBER • TAD in incuse letters.
The Coin: A circulated specimen that saw some hands. It shows wear and has the normal marks and dings. Also, at some time it was lightly cleaned but is now toning again. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
