Description
This is very nice and extremely rare, due to the circumstances understandingly so, fully original, large, “Crown” size plus, silver, "Crocione" or "Kronenthaler" from the “Duchy of Milan” in Italy. It was struck in 1800 at the Milan mint during the reign of "Duke" Francis II, who at this time, was still also the "Holy Roman Emperor".
But neither the "Duchy" of Milan, nor the "Holy Roman Empire" were destined to last much longer. Milan had been conquered by Napoleon and had become the Capital of the "Cisalpine Republic" in 1796. But Francis did not give up control of northern Italy and in 1799 the French and Austrians were fighting and control of Milan shifted back and forth.
1800 began with Austria controlling the city, but on June 14, Napoleon won the “Battle of Marengo” and northern Italy with it. The “Cisalpine Republic” was in charge again and the “Duchy of Milan” was history.
Francis here, was the last "Holy Roman Emperor" and the thousand-year history of the Empire, begun by Charlemagne in 800 AD, came to an end in 1806. But Francis lived and became "Emperor" of Austria.

The Coin: A very rare crown, the catalog even says so! It values this at $7000.00 in this grade. It saw some hands and earned the honest wear and a few marks. It has a few adjustment marks but they are normal for these and don’t affect the grade. It managed to avoid all the intervening melting pots and all the well-intentioned but ill-advised coin cleaners, a very nice piece overall. Even though it has been professionally graded, grading is subjective, so please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
