The Olive Grove Years – Sheffield Wednesday 1887-1899

The open embrace of professionalism in 1885 provided the impetus for the lavish expenditure in 1887 on a new ground by The Wednesday, the club that, in a drive to win more matches, had in 1876 become the first to secretly pay a player, Scotsman Jimmy Lang. The new ground was called The Olive Grove and the expense proved to be money well-spent as the club were subsequently to sweep away all their loval rivals, win the Football Alliance, secure a place in the Football League and become the first Yorkshire club to win a major trophy when they lifted the F.A. Cup in 1896. This well-illustrated book contains a season-by look at the club's time at their first permanent home, before the move to Hillsborough in 1899. Published in 2024.
