This is an outstanding find of a beautiful, mechanical, lightly used, traditional 8 Day cuckoo clock that was created about 40 years ago in the Black Forest of "Titisee/Neustadt Germany" by "David Hones," one of the finest and more creative clock makers in this region of the world. The clock is ornately detailed, and is a great example of fine, wavy old-world carvings and features a rare, 3-bird case with a remarkable blended dark walnut finish! It is an impressive size too measuring about 15 1/2" high (not counting the chains, weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 11 1/2" at its widest point. The clock is well preserved and carved the old world, high standard way from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Alps and Black Forest. The clock front is designed to look like an intricate grape vine and adorned with seven, nicely carved, large wooden grape leaves and vines; very nice! There is a stunning, beautifully carved, large wooden bird perched on a grape vine to the left of the wooden dial and an equally impressive, carved wooden bird perched to the right of the wooden dial. Both seem to be gazing warily upward at an even larger deeply carved wooden bird perched atop the clock looking as though he is ready to take flight. The wooden dial has a brown wooden center and the chapter ring has a black background featuring white Roman numerals to mark the hours and a rare pair of matching, fancy, wooden hands to point out the time. The back door is wood too and is secured with a metal latch. It opens to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement produced by "Regula" and bears the D Hones name and Titisee/Neustadt Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains needs to be pulled every week or so or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistle tubes are intact, make good sound, and the tops look good too. At the bottom of the hour, a colorful bird opens the wooden door above the wood dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock and closing the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before going back inside and closing the door; absolutely fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and though it looks very nice, it is not new. It does show some signs of past maintenance but we don't know the full service history. All cuckoo clocks need to be serviced regularly and we advise that you do so with any of your vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a grape leaf shaped wooden pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and find very little signs of use and no missing parts. I did notice that one of the birds has a hard-to-see piece of the tail that is broken off but nevertheless, It shows quite well and is just breathtaking on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of German clock workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a unique, 8 day, mechanical Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it. Bid with absolute confidence; I have no doubt that you will adore this clock!
