PIERRE LUC CHARLES CICERI (1782-1868), MINIATURE WATERCOLOUR PAINTING, SIGNED 1

Description:

An antique miniature watercolour painting by Pierre-Luc-Charles Ciceri (1782-1868), signed within the artwork, and dating to the second quarter of the 19th Century.

The painting, of watercolour and gouache on paper, depicts three figures on a road in an Italianate landscape standing close to a wooden signpost. The sign is inscribed in gothic script ‘Ciceri’ – a manner known to have been used by the artist.

It is cleanly mounted and framed under glass in a molded gilt gesso and wood frame.

We have another very similar artwork by the same artist, and other pieces by the Ciceri family, so please take a look at our other items.

Background:

Pierre Cicéri was chief designer at the Paris Opera from 1816 to 1847, as well as designing for many of the other theatres in Parish. Beginning in 1805, Cicéri was hired as a staff painter, specialising in landscapes, and in 1816, replaced his father-in-law, Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767–1855) as head painter.

As Painter to the King of France, he supervised the decorations for the coronation of Charles X in 1825.

He was awarded a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur. His son, Eugène Cicéri, also became a famous painter, illustrator and set designer.
