Here’s a rare model pipe from Comoy's, called TROCADERO. I’ve come across very few of these, and they’re still a bit of a mystery. The name TROCADERO is noted as The Trocadero, site of the Palais de Chaillot, is an area of Paris, France. This model was apparently made in the 1930’s, because this one would be dated to that timeframe by a couple of markings and the design of the shank end. It’s marked PAT PENDING on the bottom of the shank, but has no patent number. If you examine the end of the shank, it’s apparent that the invention of installing an aluminum ring into the shank end, as a way to prevent splitting of a thin shank, is what the patent relates to. The design was short lived, but was initially done in the 1930’s. The other stamp is the circular MADE IN ENGLAND mark, with IN in the center, and that is also from the 1930’s. The shape is 296 for a classic mid-sized Canadian. The bowl shows off some pretty stunning flame grain, with good contrast. The bowl is in good but not perfect shape, has some normal use showing. The bottom of the shank below that reinforcement ring has a small missing area of wood. The bowl interior is well-seasoned, with a thin even cake, and the draw hole is at the bottom center, and it draws easy – should be a nice smoker as a result. The stem is vulcanite, and has light tooth marks, taper cut. It has 3-Bar logo inset on the side, so it’s the original for sure, no stinger, non-filter. It lines up slightly off to the shank, but doesn’t affect the use. Weighs in about .9 ounces. Best guess at dating is 1960’s to 1970's. Carefully reconditioned, polished and is ready to load up.
