Description

This is a choice, original, Red-Brown Brilliant Uncirculated, "Cinco" or Five Centavos from the Mexican "State of Chihuahua". Dated 1915, these were at least partially struck from cut down telegraph wire, done to disrupt government communications, during the revolutionary period in Mexico.

“Pancho Villa” was one of the foremost leaders of the Mexican Revolution. He was Governor of Chihuahua in 1913 and 1914 when he and Emiliano Zapata were allied with Venustiano Carranza in the "Constitutionalist Army" fighting Victoriano Huerta, who had assassinated the President and Vice-President of Mexico in 1913 and seized power.

Weight: 6.35 Grams, 25 Millimeters, Copper. Mintage: Unknown.
"Standard Catalog of World Coins" (1901-2000) by Krause-Mishler. #613.

Obverse: REPUBLICA MEXICANA • E. DE CHIHa • Estado de Chihuahua. • Ornamental fleur-de-lis separate the legend. • Resplendado or radiant liberty cap with the word LIBERTAD on the head band.

By 1915 they had disposed of Huerta and Villa and Zapata had turned against Carranza and were currently fighting a Civil War against him. They victoriously entered the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City on December 4, 1914, but by 1915 they were beginning the series of losses that led, with United States backing, to Carranza's victory. Villa is also remembered for leading the deadly raid on Columbus, New Mexico that provoked Woodrow Wilson to send a “Punitive Expedition” commanded by General John J. Pershing, with his aide, Lt. George Patton, that eventually failed to find him and was discontinued.

Reverse: EJERCITO CONSTITUCIONALISTA • Constitutionalist Army. • 1915 • 5¢ or five centavos.

The Coin: Cartwheel luster, mostly original red, a beautiful brilliant uncirculated specimen. Fully original, it has never been cleaned. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
