Wang 300 Series Modern Electronic Package
If
you have a Wang 300 Series Calculator console, you know that it
requires an Electronic Package - an external box filled with vintage
electronics - to function. I have made a modern Electronic Package (MEP) that closely emulates the
original Wang calculator behavior, and turns your console
into a nixie clock whenever the calculator is left idle for 5 minutes.
Your Wang 300 series console should have a cable coming out the back with a Centronics connector on it. That connector plugs directly into the MEP. The MEP is powered by a 12V adapter (which is included in this sale). The MEP emulates the Wang calculator to the best of
my ability, even reproducing the way the display flickered when it was
multiplying or dividing, and the bizarre way it handled divide-by-zero.
There's
a lot to know before you decide to buy this. Please look at the manual I
wrote at https://www.galacticstudios.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Modern-Electronic-Package-Manual.pdf.
Also, please watch the video demo:
If you buy
this, you'll get the Modern Electronic Package board, and a 12V power
adapter.
Some important points:
- This listing does not include a Wang 300 series console. You need to either own one, or get one.
- This listing includes the Modern Electronic Package and a 12V power adapter for North America.
- The
MEP has been tested with the Wang 320K, 360K, and 360KT consoles. It should work with other models too, including the ones with
trigonometric functions.
- The MEP should work with the Wang
362 keyboard, but it will function like a 360. The 362's extra
registers, and their unique behavior, will not be emulated.
- The MEP has not been tested with 370 consoles.
- The MEP has not been tested with the Wang Card Programmer or the Item Counter. I have reason to believe that it will work with the card programmer, but I don't guarantee it.
- The emulation of the original Wang behavior is really close, but not perfect.
- The MEP has been developed and tested by me. It has not gone through a
formal QA process. I do not guarantee the accuracy of calculations. It's
fine for balancing your checkbook, but if you're designing nuclear
reactors, use someone else's calculator.
- Neither I nor the MEP have any connection to Wang Laboratories, or whoever owns the company's assets these days.
