WHITE SALMON VALLEY, WASHINGTON

Author: [Washington]
Title: WHITE SALMON VALLEY, WASHINGTON
Publication: White Salmon, Washington: The Development League, circa 1910

Description: Pamphlet. In early 20th century Washington, horticulture was an important economic driver, particularly in the Columbia River Gorge. A combination of this practice, along with new roads and the expansion of rail service, led to the "Apple Boom" of the 1910s.

This locally-produced example of booster literature is filled with reports of record profits from recent yields, increases in land values, the availability of timber and water power, and various local amenities. Notably, the White Salmon strawberry receives equal billing with apples: "So eagerly are our early berries sought by Seattle's epicureans, that commission men from that city keep their solicitors out among the growers daily begging for as many crates as a grower can supply them with at a fancy price."

Booklet: [20] p. with numerous photographic illustrations and a tipped-in folding map. Bound with two staples in pictorial white cardstock wrappers. The contents are a little musty, with some faint spotting and smudging to the wrappers. Scarce, OCLC locates no holdings, with a single copy of a similar piece at Washington State University.
