Offered here is a space-flown Thermal Protection System tile fragment removed from the Space Shuttle orbiter Columbia from an early mission.  This tile, the HRSI type, was damaged on mission STS-94 which flew in space between 1-17 July 1997.  The tile was destructively removed on August 6th,  1997 while preparing the ship for its next flight.


The tile was destructively removed, causing it to fragment into many pieces.  This specimen is one of those pieces.  The specimen  displays both outer tetracillicide glass (black- space exposed), and interior white silica insulation.  The quarter is shown for scale.  A superb display and educational piece for your manned spaceflight collection!
