Meissen is famous for the manufacture of porcelain (production dates from the early 18th century), based on extensive local deposits of china clay (kaolin) and potter's clay (potter's earth).
Johann Gregor Herold or Johann Gregorius Höroldt (6 August 1696, in JENA– 26 January 1775, in MEISSEN) was a German painter and PORECELAIN PAINTER. He was a key early figure in defining the styles of decoration for  MEISSEN PORELAIN from 1723 onwards.
