It's always difficult for me to fathom how pipes like this get put away and never see flame, especially for 45 years! This is somewhat of a rarity, a 1979 Dunhill Root Briar 32081 and it just so happens to come complete with original box, papers, guarantee and gorgeous red glove! The 32081 only existed for a few years between the late 1970's and early 1980's and I think it ultimately became the "08" shape which is a bent Bulldog though with variations of shanks and stem arrangements. Though the 70's were somewhat forgettable for Dunhill, the late 70's brought a renaissance of sorts as they brought back some of their classic finishes and started producing exceptional pipes again. Though, I will say the Root Briar flourished in the 70's with many DR's produced as well. Anyhow, again this 1979 is a gem and awaits its maiden voyage. There is nothing more quintessentially English than a bent Bulldog and the 32081 here encompasses that. The bowl is a touch squat, wide and robust with dual beads, thick walls and a healthy sized chamber. The heel rounds out giving it a touch of Rhodesian character but quickly becomes Bulldog again with it's muscular diamond shank in a half bend and meets the original vulcanite saddle stem with fishtail bit and signature white spot. Finish reminds me of 1960's Roots, a lovely Butterscotch while the briar shows a classic cut with birdseye adorning the flanks and fine cross grain running from front to rear. A rare opportunity at a vintage Dunhill Root Briar, I envy the high bidder who gets to fire this pipe up for the very first time!

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 16 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
