The Ilyushin Stormovik which first appeared in 1941 became the best known of all the Soviet Air Force machines of WW II.  It made its first flight on 20 December 1939 and entered service in 1941.

One of the few wartime aircraft designed specifically for ground attack and close support duties, the Stormovik was designed by S. V. Ilyushin, a brilliant designer, who is now responsible for some of the leading Russian airliners.  The original IL-2 entered service as a single seater and although well armed an extremely well protected with armor plate, it proved vulnerable to fighter attack.  In its first year of service few Stormoviks were brought down by fire from the ground but casualties in aerial combat were high and some solution had to be found.

In 1942 the IL-2 M.3 came into action: this was basically the same Stormovik with a lengthened cockpit housing a second crew member operating a 12.7 mm machine gun for rearward defense.  This version proved completely satisfactory in service, its rocket projectiles and cannon taking heavy toll of German armor, troops and trains.

The Stormovik remained in service with the Soviet Air Force throughout the war and for some years after and was also operated by the Polish Air Force when it was reformed after the war.  A total of 36,183 Il-2s and Il-10s were built.  The last of the Il-2s were retired by Yugoslavia and Bulgaria in 1954.

In 1943 design was begun on an upgraded version which eventually was designated the Il-10.  This aircraft was to to be faster and more heavily armed.  The Il-10 made its first flight on 18 April 1944 and entered service the same year.  Three Il-10 units took part in the final operations in Europe and one unit saw service in Korea that year.  The 93 Il-10s that had been given to North Korea saw service in the early weeks of the Korean War but were soon depleted by US fighters, and the USSR delivered more of the Il-10s.  The Soviets retired the Il-10 in 1956 and the final aircraft were retired by Czechoslovakia in 1962.  A total of 6166 Il-10s were built of which 1200 were the B-33 which were built under license in Czechoslovakia.

Please, let us know if you need the item for a special event or by a specific date and we will assist in meeting your schedule.  Remember that first class and priority mail takes 2 or 3 days, and parcel post or media mail takes 6 to 10 days.  Express mail can be done overnight if everything comes together and second day if it doesn’t.  Please E-mail us if you have any questions

We have been advised by the US Post Office that shipping anything to South America is risky and there is a good possibility that the item will end up on the black market.  They recommend that the package be shipped with a “return receipt” and that gives the best chance of the item arriving.

A Note on our Shipping and Handling.

Our shipping and handling (S&H) is based on the size and weight of the item plus an estimation of the weight of the packing materials.  This gives us the amount the USPS will charge to ship the item, we then add two or three dollars to cover the purchase of boxes, packing material and our time and mileage to pack and ship the item.  This means that while we may charge you $9.00 for S&H the price that you see on the postage when it arrives will likely be 6 or 7 dollars.  It doesn’t mean that we’re trying to scam you or otherwise take advantage, it’s just what it takes to cover our costs in running this store.

We do customize S&H charges for multiple item shipments based on the combined weight and size of the items plus weight and cost of the box, an estimation of the weight of packing materials, and $1 for each additional item.

In order to do this takes a bit of time so please give us ten (10) business days to ship your item.  If we run into any additional delays we will let you know just as soon as we can.
