Description:
The
2013 edition of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program
features the fourth annual release of five quarters in the America the
Beautiful Quarters Program. This set
consists of 120 circulating quality quarters – one roll of 40 quarters with the
“P” mint mark for the United States Mint at Philadelphia; one roll of 40
quarters with the “D” mint mark for the United States Mint at Denver; and one
roll of 40 quarters with the “S” mint mark for the United States Mint at San
Francisco. In 2012, “S” mint mark
circulation quality coins were added to the program. Unlike
the "P" and "D" mint mark quarters, those with the
"S" mint mark will not be released into circulation.
The
Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial quarter is the second of 2013
and the 17th overall in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. This set
consists of 80 circulating quality quarters, one roll of 40 quarters with the
“D” mint mark for the United States Mint at Denver and one roll of 40 quarters
with the “P” mint mark for the United States Mint at Philadelphia. Each 40 coin roll has been finished with a
special numismatic wrapper.
The
United States Mint launched the America the Beautiful Quarters Program in 2010.
The 12-year initiative includes 56 quarters featuring reverse designs depicting
some of our most cherished national parks and other national sites. The United
States Mint will issue five new quarter designs per year, with one final design
in 2021. The fourth year of the program, 2013, features the fourth group of
five quarters in the series.
Design:
The
reverse design depicts the statue of Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry with
the Peace Memorial located in the distance. The memorial is one of the tallest
of its kind in the U.S. Inscriptions are PERRY’S VICTORY, OHIO, 2013 and E
PLURIBUS UNUM. Design candidates were developed in consultation with
representatives of Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial.
This
memorial site in Ohio was established to honor those who fought in the Battle
of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 and to celebrate the long-lasting peace
among Britain, Canada and the U.S. The memorial, a Doric column rising 352 feet
over Lake Erie, is situated five miles from the longest undefended border in
the world. The memorial bears the name of Master Commandant Oliver Hazard
Perry. Six naval officers (three American and three British) slain during the
battle are buried under its rotunda. It was first established as a national
site on March 3, 1919 (40 Stat. 1322).
