Dong Quai is an herb that is native to China and has been used for centuries throughout China, Korea, and Japan for centuries. Growing at high altitudes throughout Northeast Asia, this member of the celery family has light purple stems and small white flowers and fruits that blossom in late summer. It is highly regarded in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) primarily to treat conditions of the female reproductive system. In TCM, it is said to help fatigue, anemia, high blood pressure, relieve symptoms of menopause, cramps, PMS, and increase female sexual desire.

The benefits that are claimed from use of Dong Quai do not stop there; it has been found to be help strengthen many organs and systems of the body such as the heart, kidneys, spleen, lungs, and blood.

While this wonderful herb has so many positive effects, there are some precautions to take before using it, so it is very important to consult a licensed healthcare practitioner prior to use. Dong Quai is not recommended to women that are pregnant or nursing; and it should not be used in conjunction with garlic, ginger, licorice, skullcap, turmeric, ginkgo biloba, and Asian ginseng.

Active Ingredients:

Dong Quai contains numerous coumarins, which have been found to have vasodilator and antispasmodic effects. Some of these coumarins are osthol, bergapten, and psoralen.

How to take it?

Our tinctures contain 40% grain alcohol in order to preserve the quality of the solution. Since alcohol can have a rather offensive taste, we have a number of suggestions for how to ingest this:

• Place the drops directly under the tongue and chase with a small glass of water, juice, or any other fluid that may taste more pleasant

• Place the drops directly in an ounce or so of water or other fluid and drink that

• If serving to children under the age of 21, or if you want to avoid the harsh taste of the alcohol, you can either let the tincture sit out or heat it up on very low heat, until the alcohol evaporates (alcohol evaporates faster than water)

If the manufacturer was able to compress this soaked plant material, only a portion of this liquid would be able to be removed from the plant matter. Even if perfect separation of liquid from plant matter was possible, it would only contain 50% of the valuable constituents of the plant, because in solution there is an equilibrium of active components dispersed between the plant matter and the liquid. Again, this is only in theory, it is actually impossible to extract all of the liquid from the plant matter, so more than 50% of the active constituents would be left unused in the plant matter. Other suppliers claim to use large quantities of plant material, but they do not specify whether it is fresh or dry. Fresh plant material contains 80% or more water by weight.
