Original 1872 Map LYMAN York County Maine Shakers Schools Railroad Mills History
Original
hand colored antique map of Lyman, Maine, printed more than 140 years
ago.
This map labels property owners and
locates school houses, churches, cemeteries, a saw mill, a shingle
mill, roads,
and individual homes, farms, and other features.
It also labels two Shaker farms in the Governor's Corner area, north
of Bunganut Pond and part of the large community of Shakers centered in
neighboring Alfred. It was at Alfred that Shaker Elder Joseph Brackett
wrote what is perhaps the best-known Shaker song, “Simple Gifts,” in
1848, twenty-four years before this map was printed. The composer Aaron Copland
later made this melody famous in his
the score of his ballet “Appalachian Spring.”
Other specific named places and features include Kennebunk Pond, the
Portland &
Rochester Railroad, Goodwin's Mills, and Tar Water Pond. There's a
business directory
in the lower corner.
The map has a decorative border and is colored by school district. The
image area measures 40.6 x 30 cm [16" x 11-3/4"], and
the map was published in 1872 by Sanford, Everts & Company,
Philadelphia in Atlas of York County, Maine.
This is an original, authentic antique map, not a

genuine.
