Up for sale is a copy of "ESSAYS ON PHYSIOGNOMY, Designed To Promote The Knowledge And The Love Of Mankind.  By John Caspar Lavater, Citizen Of Zurich, And Minister Of The Gospel.  Illustrated by Engravings, Accurately Copied; and some Duplicates Added From Originals.  Executed By, Or Under The Inspection Of, Thomas Holloway.  Translated From The French By Henry Hunter, D.D.

This is for Volume II, Part II ONLY.  All of the engravings in the volume are in black and white.  Most of the engravings are of heads and faces - men, women, children, young, old.

Physiognomy is the assessment of a person's character or personality from his or her outer appearance, especially the face.  The term can also refer to the general appearance of a person, object, or terrain, without reference to its implied characteristics, as in the physiognomy of a plant community.  Credence of such study has varied from time to time.  The practice was well-accepted by the ancient Greek philosophers, but fell into disrepute in the Middle Ages when practised by vagabonds and mountebanks.  It was then revived and popularised by Johann Caspar Lavater before falling from favour again in the late 19th century.

This volume includes chapters on the subjects of famous portraits - Sir Richard Steele, Raphael, Apollo, etc.

Overall the interior of the book is generally in Good Condition, however, the leather boards are present, but no longer attached.  The back board has tape on it where a previous owner tried to tape it to the spine.  There are The spine is cracked, scuffed and stained and the leather is peeling. Some of the engravings have transposed themselves onto the facing pages.  The engravings themselves, are generally, in very nice shape!

Internally, there is wear, foxing and browning to the pages.  A few nicks or creases on some of the edges.  There is also browning and foxing to some of the engravings, however, most of the damage is to the pages and does not affect the actual images.  Also, the book has a slight musty smell.

This is an ex-library book, so there are purple library stamps throughout the volume.  There are several nameplates pasted inside the front board and on the front end page, by a previous owner.

Other dings here and there.  Please email with questions and see my store for other great items.
