McCollum and Davis first recognized Vitamin A as fat-soluble factor A. In 1912, they usied an experiment made up of Vitamin A sourced from cod liver oil, butter and egg yolk. In 1957, Carotenoid - plant based sources of Vitamin A was discovered by Thomas Moore. That said, using Vitamin A-rich food sources as medicine is well known by Ancient Greeks, especially by Hippocrates. He used it to treat ill livers, result of Vitamin A deficiency.
Vitamin A is sourced from different foods. Retinol is the animal-based version of Vitamin A, whereas Carotenoids are found in plant-based sources. There are over 600 Carotenoids; however not all of them are beneficial to human health. As the Carotenoids enter the body they are converted to all trans-retinol, which is used by the body.
Other sources of pre-formed retinol include Butter, Cod liver oil, Egg yolk, Oily fishes and Whole milk. Carotenoid sources include broccoli, carrots, peppers, parsley, kale, sweet potato and dark green leafy vegetables. Recommended doses of Vitamin A 0.7mg (men) and 0.6mg (women)
