Here we have a very rare teapot with lid, each with a
beautiful inlaid agate band.
Complimenting the agate bands are incised white glazed rouletted beaded
bands. This is an extremely rare
piece of yellow ware described in Jonathan Rickard’s definitive book “MOCHA and
related dipped wares, 1770-1939”. This
teapot is unique to the Douai Pottery of France which was in operation from
1781 – 1820. Curiously, this was most
likely the work of the English potters Charles and John Leigh who were employed
at the Douai Pottery. The teapot
measures 4 ½” in height to the rim and 5 ¼” to the top of the finial. The teapot is in mint condition and the lid
is missing one of the two tabs that hold the lid in place when in use. The edge of the lid has been damaged and
repaired. This is one of many wonderful
pieces of mochaware I am offering that would enhance and be highly prized in
any collection.
