Offered by Over The Blue Horizon is a rare treasure of Hawaii: an original, 1916 copy of “PUNAHOU 1841-1916” by Ethel M. Damon. 

 

To be more specific, the title on the cover is "PUNAHOU 1841-1916" and on the title page it is entitled "THE SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY PAGEANT PUNAHOU" and dated June 21, 1916.  It is dedicated to 'Arthur Floyd Griffiths and The Trustees of the Oahu College, representatives of that Long Line of Presidents and Trustees who Never Losing Hold On The Ideal not only have built The Punahou of Today but also are surely fashioning The Punahou of Tomorrow, this anniversary book A Shadowing-Forth of the Punahou Ideal is dedicted'.  The cover art work is by James A. Wilder and is described as follows: 'The gourd water-bottle "huewai" of the ancient Hawaiians, full of life-giving fluid from the new spring "Punahou" and the torch "luekui" giving life and light to all, represented the end and aim of Punahou. The seven and five "luekui" nuts fastened to the outside of the torch may easily be read 75 for this anniversary'.  The book is a fascinating history of the school, lovingly written and beautifully illustrated with prints by J. May Fraser and Jessie C.  Shaw.  This book is rare -- there are reproductions for sale but we have only been able to find one other original -- and it was being offered for $750.  If you are a serious Punahou/Hawaiiana collector, here's your chance to own a coveted piece of early 20th century Hawaii at a relatively affordable price.

 

This 77-page, 6.5 x 9.75 inch hardcover appears to have been privately published, probably at Punahou, in 1916.  Condition is DECENT considering its age.  As can be seen from the accompanying scans, the cover has suffered damage along the upper and lower portions of its spine, and the covers show lesser damage along their edges and corners. The pages still remain attached to the spine but there has been bug damage (treated). The pages are toned and there is some minor foxing, but overall, it is in DECENT condition considering its age.  See the accompanying scans for a ‘visual’ on this rare book’s condition issues as well as to better appreciate just how nice it is.
