NO RESERVE. 1/72 WWII de Havilland DH89 Dominie / Rapide still flying at UK vintage aircraft flying displays!!

The aircraft as it now exists in the livery of Scottish Airways, Ltd., Registration "G - AGJG" and is a DH89 with Serial Number #6517 and is apparently owned and flown by a David Miller. It was constructed in 1941 with Serial Number #X7344, which means it would have been known as a de Havilland DH89 Dominie. The exact reason it appears in Royal Air Force WWII camouflage could not be determined but the following facts might explain this.

Scottish Airways, Ltd. was formed in 1946 as a subsidiary of the manufacturing company Scottish Aviation, Ltd. of Glascow, Scotland and existed until 1960. It offered cargo and passenger services from hubs at Prestwick Airport outside of Glascow and Stansted Airport, London and during its existence flew 9 different types of aircraft, the vast majority of which were war surplus machines. During WWII Scottish Aviation functioned as a fitting-out and conversion company and this might have given the company a sense that they could use their experience to provide low-priced aircraft to an airline subsidiary. It only began producing aircraft of its own design with the STOL Pioneer which first flew on November 5, 1947.

Scottish Airways participated in the Berlin Airlift, performing troop carrying flights for the British Armed Forces under contract. At one time its fleet consisted of 3 Douglas DC-3/C-47 Dakotas and 2 Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneers. The timeframe could not be discovered, but since the Twin Pioneer aircraft only became available in 1956 and Scottish Airways ceased operations in 1960, it is quite possible that this was the composition of the airline's fleet when it went out of business. This small fleet size and the fact that the other eight types it operated besides the Twin Pioneers had all originated as military aircraft suggests that the Dragon Rapide represented by this model was the only one of that it flew.

Based on the above, its our supposition that Scottish Airlines only flew one Dragon Rapide and that was used mainly, if not exclusively, under a contract to transport British military personnel to and from Berlin during the Berlin Airlift. This aircraft might have been procured from surplus by Scottish Aviation at the time - or it at least was still in its WWII camouflage scheme when they put it back in service - and it was placed into operation for the airlift with just the civilian registration and minimal identification markings. Finally, it is possible that the aircraft that flew in the airlift bearing Serial Number #X7344 no longer exists and that the aircraft that was restored and is used in the flying displays bearing Serial Number #6517 is not the actual Berlin Airlift aircraft but only replicates it.

Propellers spin. Can be display "on the ground" or "in flight" on the stand provided. Landing gear can be removed and replaced with closed wheel well doors if shown "in flight" but to minimize handling the model, we have not attached the open wheel well doors for our pictures with the gear down or the closed doors when "in flight". Oxford's stands mount the aircraft nose-down banked to the right so we've propped the model up into a level position for our fourth and fifth pictures. The way the model normally appears when its stand is level is shown in the fifth picture.

The model and its stand are set in a form-cut foam rubber insert in a dark blue simulated leather box with a folding top which is comes in a elegant dark blue cardboard sleeve. Diecast model. Oxford Aviation #72DR003. MIB.

FOR ANYONE NOT FAMILIAR WITH HOW TO INTERPRET A MODEL'S SCALE, THE MODEL IS 5 3/4 INCHES LONG AND HAS A 8 INCH WINGSPAN. THESE ARE EQUIVALENT TO DIVIDING THE LENGTH AND WINGSPAN OF THE REAL AIRCRAFT IN INCHES BY 72.
